A 21st anniversary message from Perry Beeman:
All Classes Holiday Get Together marks 21st Anniversary on December 26, 2015, the day after Christmas 2015
What started as the Ames High School Class of '77's desire to hold informal gatherings in addition to formal
reunions led to an all-classes reunion in Ames every holiday season. Perry Beeman and Julie (Anderson) Larson of the Class of
'77 set up the original evening gathering in 1994. They quickly decided to invite all Ames High School
grads. Many Ames High grads don't want to wait until a formal reunion rolls around to chat, and this was a way to cater to those
back for the holidays. The idea was to keep it simple: show up, buy your own refreshments, no tickets, no fees, no fuss. Along
the way, fellow Ames High grads Bill Nutty and Heidi Conis helped build the turnout, which now often is bigger than some formal
reunions. "We began with 30 or so, mostly from '77, but it continued to build," Beeman said. "Let's just say I gained a lot of
Facebook friends when word got around I was one of the organizers."
In 2013, a crowd of 150 or so represented AHS classes from 1972 to 2008. Typically, the event occurs
the Friday between the holidays, or whichever Friday seems to make the most sense. For convenience and tradition, the
gathering has remained at Olde Main Brewing Co., 316 Main St., which is big enough to handle a large crowd and has a full menu.
Details are always at www.ameshigh.org a year in advance. Still confused? Email Beeman at perrybeeman@gmail.com.
This year's gathering is Saturday Dec 26, 2015. We'll look forward to seeing you. Please invite your classmates.
See you at the next GREAT AHS Holiday Gathering!
The All Class AHS Holiday Gathering is normally held the Friday between Christmas and New Year's. If
the holidays hit that day like it does this year in 2015 (and like it did in 2009 and again in 2010 and 2011) we
pick a different date, but this year date.
The 2015 Ames High School Alumni Holiday Gathering / Reunion night will be Saturday evening,
December 26, 2015 at Olde Main Brewing Co. in downtown Ames. We normally take over the place. It's simple, we set the date, you
show up, buy your own food or drinks, and, if you're a big spender, for your friends. Then drink up (in moderation of
course and we encourage soda pop or water), chat, and get caught up. This has been a meaningful, wonderful reconnection for many people, and we've had
classmates from New York, California, Florida, Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois and elsewhere attend. The holiday gathering got
off the ground 18 years ago, in a small way and mostly involving the AHS Class of '77, but has
become much more. "We started out with about 30 people a year, but in the last couple of years, this has really taken off,"
Beeman said. "I rely heavily on the this alumni site for email addresses - and beg people to update theirs -- and that helps.
What really got this going, though, is the simple act of friends letting their friends know about it through personal email
address books and phone calls. The alumni newsletter and the website also carry notices.
Why?
The idea for an informal All Classes AHS reunion came out of years of discussions among Perry
Beeman, Julie (Anderson) Larson, Bill Nutty (all 3 from the AHS Class of '77) and others. The
thought was to catch people while they were back in town for the holidays, and to have an informal, relaxing, annual fun
gathering (i.e. reunion) for those of us who hate to wait five years for our own class gatherings to roll around. Finally,
the trio of big talkers backed it up by actually planning an event.
Please help get the word out. Every year, we have hurt feelings because someone didn't didn't know about it.
The more emails and phone calls, the better.

Stats thru 2015
Details: Just like last year! Lots and lots of fun and reminiscing and catching up and meeting new AHS Alum. Plus, you see your friends from other classes who you normally don't see at your own AHS
class reunion because this is an ALL Class AHS gathering. About 100 AHS Alumni turned out for the 2006 AHS Holiday event, and a record 110 turned out
in 2007 from the AHS classes of 1967 to 2003. Some scholars think it might have even been more.
The foggy weather caused attendance to drop to 50 in 2008, there was a good turnout in 2009, 2010 wasn't the
largest turnout we have ever had, but there was a respectible showing of about 60 AHS
Alumni in 2010. Perry says a lot of younger classes are showing up now too and it is harder for him to know who
the AHS grads are, so
maybe there were more than 60 classmates at the gatherings in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The 2013 All Holiday Gathering had the
2nd largest attendence at 150+ alum, the AHS classes of 2008 and 1998 had big reunions the previous summer, so they both
opted to also have Holiday mini-reunions over the holidays and piggy-backed onto our 2013 event (see photos on this page),
this was great! There were approximately 20 from 2008 and 20 from 1998, which bumped up our attendence by 40.
The 2014 Holiday Get-together (see photos on this page), had a tie for the 3rd largest turnout at 110+ and the 2015 Holiday
Gathering broke the all time attendance record. Perry bought 160 name tags the day of the gathering, all nametages were
gone by 9pm. 200+ attended this fun 2015 gathering, the most ever! AHS classes attended from AHS 1960 all the way to
AHS 2014 (Bill and Tracy Nutty's daughter attended from the AHS class of 2014) !!
Disclaimer:
This is the age of disclaimers, and of course we have one too. This Get-Together is not
sponsored by the AHSAA, or anyone else affilated with AHS. We just want to
see all our great friends from AHS again.

1960 55th Class Post Reunion Summary Report and Letter from Dallas Rust.
Congratulations to the class of 1960
From $0 to $10,000+ in 45 Days
by Dallas (Wall) Rust, Class of 1960
It started with a conversation a few days before our 55th Ames High Class of 1960 Reunion.
Meeting places had been reserved, hotel rooms booked, food ordered, invitations sent,
reservations and money collected. It was time to sit back and relax until the Reunion and then …
The words uttered were, “Hey, Dallas, has our class ever given back to the school as a class?” I
responded with my own question, “You mean as in money?” And so it began...
No, the Class of 1960 had never donated any money other than giving the Alumni Association a
smattering of left-over money from past reunions. Our class was always delighted if/when we
found that we might have enough money left over after a reunion to apply toward stamps for the
next reunion. We have had a reunion every 5 years since we graduated. Our goal (other than to
have a fantastic time reminiscing and re-connecting with classmates) was to keep expenses down
and not charge anything more than absolutely necessary. Therefore, there never was any extra
We started talking about the fact that Ames High shaped so many of our lives and provided us
with an invaluable education. It seemed strange that we hadn’t thought of giving as a class before.
The classmate then stunned me by saying, “I’d be willing to match up to $5,000 donated to the
Ames Education Foundation.
WOW!! This was an opportunity that couldn’t be wasted. I quickly met with Annie Arbuckle of
the Ames Education Foundation to find out how we could orchestrate this since there were just 3
days left before the Reunion. She made it very easy.
After announcing the challenge at the Reunion and sending emails to our class email list, the
money started arriving. Some classmates gave $20, some $25, some $30, some $40, some $50,
some $100, some $250, some $300, and some $500. Slowly it started adding up. Each week I
sent an update to the class on how much money we had received and coupled it with the donated
amount. When we got to the $6,000 mark I was very proud; at $7,000 I was very happy; at
$8,000 I was giddy; at $9,000 I was amazed. Then when we were close to the $10,000 challenge,
I started getting worried. Could we really get to $10,000? I had already received the $5,000 check
from our classmate. Could we really match his $5,000?? In the mail the “final day of giving”,
there were checks enough to put us over our challenge. I was ecstatic! We raised a total $10,560.
Reunions are a time to reflect on occurances and people that were important to us at a time in our
lives when we are growing, maturing, and learning life lessons. Ames High School had a huge
influence on the people in my class. The physical building, the teachers, the classmates, the
curriculum—all meshed together into an exciting experience that provided us with the
background to be whatever it was we were to become. What better way to give back to that
institution which did so much to shape our lives than to contribute to the Ames Education
Yes, $0 to $10,000+ seems extraordinary, but it was easy because Ames Hi Aims High!

Letter to the 1960 AHS Class about and before the 55th Class Reuion
Hello AHS Class of 1960
Time for celebration! We have actually achieved getting to the amazing benchmark of our 55th Ames High
School Reunion. Where have all the years gone? Come, mix, mingle, talk, and find out what has happened in
people's lives. It's pretty darn interesting!!! And on top of it all, enjoy the drinks, food, and ambiance of the
delightful Gateway Hotel and Conference Center. (Reservations: 1-800-FOR-AMES)
On Thursday evening, August 6th, classmates will gather at the Olde Main Brewing Company on Main
Street for sandwiches and drinks and talk, talk, talk.
On Friday evening August 7th, the first "planned" event will start at 5:00 PM at the Gateway Hotel and
Conference Center. There will be appetizers available to fill your tummy while you get what you want from the
cash bar. If you want to hang out in the meeting room all evening, that’s fine. If you’re still hungry after
appetizers, you can get with fellow classmates and have dinner at one of Ames’s many fine restaurants.
We are trying to plan a Saturday morning meeting at the Ames Historical Society and a tour of the "history"
floor of the Octagon, both in downtown Ames. The newly renovated library is in the same area and is a must-
see! Remember the Story Time Theater? It's still there!
The banquet will be Saturday August 8, 2015 in the evening at the Gateway, again. Cash bar will open at 5:00 PM, dinner will be
served at 6:00 PM. Rather than a formal program, many classmates wanted a chance to share stories, ask each
other questions, and play the "remember when" game.
Sunday August 9, 2015 in the morning will be informal breakfasts at different places in Ames, since most motel/hotels in Ames have
free breakfasts with rooms.
Thursday evening at Olde Main Brewery ________yes _______no -- no charge
Friday evening at Gateway Hotel _________yes _______no -- $20 per person
Saturday evening at Gateway Hotel ________yes ________no -- $45 per person
Please send your check to Gary Groat, 2119 Hayes, Ames, IA 50010 by July 5, 2015.

1965 Reunion Poem
OH NO!!!
AHS class of 1965
The postman brought the letter
Right to my door.
My reunion is coming
Need I say anything more?
My reunion is coming
And I don’t know what to say.
My weight and chins have doubled
I changed in such a big way.
Some goals of our youth
Didn't go quite as planned,
And time drifted by
Like small grains of beach sand.
We all have some wrinkles
And some hair that is gray
But oh, what the heck,
Who cares anyway?
So I head to the party,
“it doesn't matter, I say.
We all must have changed
In a similar way.
I pause at the door,
But there's been some mistake.
Did I do something wrong?
Did I get the wrong date?
But some faces seem familiar
So I continue to stare,
Do I enter the room?
Oh no, do I dare.
Great friends do I find
All changed just like me.
All continue to strive
To be the best they can be.
So much work a reunion
But it can be so much fun.
Our thanks to the committee
For all they have done
