All AHS Classes
Holiday Get Together
All
AHS Alumni, significant others, friends, elves, whoever
Hosted mostly by late 1970's and early 1980's AHS
Alumni. All AHS class years are encouraged and welcome.
The idea for an informal All Classes
AHS reunion came out of years of discussions among
Perry Beeman, Julie (Anderson) Larson, Bill Nutty (all
AHS Class of '77) and others.
The thought was to catch people while they were back in town for the holidays, and to have an informal, annual bar
night/reunion for those of us who hate to wait five years for our own class gatherings to roll around. Finally,
the trio of big talkers backed it up by actually planning an event.
This year's Ames High School Alumni Holiday Reunion night was December 26, 2008 at Olde Main Brewing Co. in
downtown Ames. We basically take over the place. It's so simple. We set the date. You show up, buy your own
drinks, and, if you're a big spender, for your friends. Then drink up (in moderation of course), chat, and get
caught up. This has been a meaningful, wonderful reconnection for many people, and we've had classmates from
New York City, San Diego, Miami and elsewhere attend. The holiday gathering got off the ground 13 years ago,
in a small way and mostly involving the
AHS Class of '77, but has become much more.
"We started out with about 30 people a year, but in the last couple of years, this has really taken off," Beeman
said. "I rely heavily on the this alumni site for email addresses - and beg people to update theirs -- and that
helps. What really got this going, though, is the simple act of friends letting their friends know about it
through personal email address books and phone calls. The alumni newsletter and the website also carry notices.
In 2006, the reunion drew more than 100 people for the first time. Last year, a record 110 showed up, from the
AHS classes of 1967 to 2003. Some scholars think it might have even been more. The
discrepancy comes from impaired judgement, vision, and math skills among some of the leaders.
The gathering is usually the Friday between Christmas and New Year's. If the holiday's hit that day, watch this
page or the Alumni
Calendar for adjustments to the schedule. Please help get the
word out. Every year, we have hurt feelings because someone didn't get the word. The more emails and phone calls,
the better.
See you at the next AHS Holiday Reunion!
Details: Just like last year! Lots of fun. About 100 AHS Alumni turned out for the 2006
AHS Holiday event, and a record 110 turned out in 2007. Lets try for 200 in 2008!
AHS ">what: 14th annual AHS All Alumni

AHS Class of 1948 Diamond
60th Class Reunion
AMES HIGH SCHOOL AMES IOWA 1948
September 12-14 2008
The
Ames High School Class of 1948 60-year Diamond
reunion plans have been finalized.
September 12 - 14, 2008
BIG SIX-OH approaches!
Yes, Friends/classmates, believe it! Our sixtieth High School AHS class-of-1948 reunion draws nigh.
We surely hope you have placed it on your calendars: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, September 12, 13, & 14, 2008.
If you failed to send us your response earlier, NOW IS THE TIME! We are hoping for a great turnout, and have
used the addresses provided by the AHS Alumni Association to reach you.
Here's the scoop:
I. Conference headquarters
After looking at other options, we settled again on the same location as for our 50- year reunion, viz.,
the
Gateway Hotel and Conference Center (slight name change), at 2100 Green Hills Drive (new address, too!).
Green Hills Drive runs east and west, just south of US-30, and south of the ISU football stadium. The north-south
road exiting from US-30 WAS called Elwood Drive, but its new name is University Blvd. It is Exit 146 (If you're on US-30 (south of Lincoln Way);
take this exit and turn south. You will see a Best Western Hotel on your left, and Green Hill Drive on your
right, which leads directly to the Gateway. Here is a Google
Map.
II. Lodging
The Gateway has reserved a block of rooms for us ("Ames High Reunions"). The rate is $99 per night plus hotel
room tax and sales tax. The sooner you call, the better your chances; the number is 800-FOR-AMES, or
800.367.2637. A local number is 515.292.8600 for Front Desk.
Other lodging nearby is the aforementioned Best Western at 2500 S. University Blvd, telephone 515.296.2500.
The rate is $75 with breakfast. A bit farther south on University (2609) there is a new Holiday Inn; Tel. 515.268.8808.
The rate there is $95 plus taxes. Back east near I-35 is the Heartland Inn, just off US-30. They advertise a rate
of $75 with breakfast also. There are several other nice hotels in that same vicinity. Please make your
reservations early, especially if you plan to stay at the Gateway. Be sure to indicate that you are with the
Ames High Reunions group. Cutoff date for the rate guarantee is August 22. After that, reservations are subject
to availability, and at the prevailing rate. Check-in time is 4:00 PM.
III. Activities
We have planned three main events:
Friday, Sept. 12 starting at 5:30 PM
We'll again have a come-as- you-are reacquaintance party at the Ames
Elks Club on Douglas Ave. across from the
Public Library. We'll have some snacks and a cash bar. This has been a lot of fun! But this time,
Ames High is playing a home football game with Ft. Dodge at 7:30. So you may elect to
buy some tickets and go to the game (and be recognized at half time if our number warrants). We can later drift
out and re-join the Elks party, go to dinner on our own, or just call it a day.
Saturday morning
We are free to just visit or (if enough people are interested) we can take a bus tour of Greater Ames (including
Iowa State). Other prospects include a visit to the famed
Reimann Gardens &
Butterfly House which is located close
by on University Blvd. near the Iowa State Center. If interested, one might also enjoy the
Living History Farms
north of Des Moines, as well as several parks and golf courses. There is also now an Ames
Historical Museum
(Some of these sites can be placed on the bus tour, as well as the
old Ames High School building). We will provide
more instructions and a detailed list at the Elks Club Party. Bob Shaffer has extended an Open House invitation
to his log cabin home on Saturday, ca. 1:00 to 3:00 PM northeast of town (6107 North Fork Road). Maps will be
available, and transportation can be arranged.
IV. Saturday night Banquet
Starting at 6:00 PM, we will gather in the foyer outside the South
Prairie banquet room for drinks and
hors d'oeuvres (cash bar). We'll have tables and a bulletin board set up there, where you may display whatever
memorabilia (letters, photos, short updates on work, retirement, etc) you wish. Even if you can't come we'd be
happy to post your items for you (They'll be returned only if they're clearly marked and identified with an address).
Dinner is at 6:45 PM
We think you'll really enjoy what we're planning for entertainment. Tom Kelly will again serve as Master of Ceremonies.
Please select from our choice of entrees: 1) Prime rib, Chicken Wellington, or Rack of Pork (see prices below, Part VI).
V. Sunday Picnic Luncheon at Moore Park
Serving is at 12:00 noon
We have reserved the
Moore Park shelter in northwest Ames (same site as for our 1998 picnic). The luncheon was
catered (cost $12 each). Directions was be provided, and transportation as needed.
VI. Cost Summary
We will need an advance payment for your banquet meal and picnic. The price of $40/dinner includes a modest charge
for audio-visual equipment, banquet charge (20%) and tax (7%). You can select from three choices:
- Prime rib (How many?____)
- Chicken Wellington (How many?____)
- Rack of pork (How many?____)
The dinner includes Chef's choice of potato or rice, vegetable, warm rolls, beverage, and a dessert. This will
also allow us to provide some hors d'oeuvres for Friday & Saturday receptions.
Please indicate (AND REMEMBER) what your meal choices are! Add to the meal charges of $40 each the Sunday
picnic charges ($12 each) and send a check for the total to our treasurer, Mary Ann Barnes, 4009 Mathews Road,
Ames, Iowa 50014. All other charges/costs are to be covered directly
(lodging, travel, etc.) Please send Mary Ann your check as soon as your plans are firm.
If you have questions, call, write, or e-mail Bob Amme (303)871-3852, 261 E. Graves Ave., Centennial, CO 80121,
ramme (at) du (dot) edu, or call any of the other members of the planning committee:
